Drop Checkers:
A recent trend in the planted tank community is the use of "drop checkers" to monitor CO2 levels in the
aqaurium. With a drop checker you can accurately measure the CO2 levels in the aquarium and you have a continuous CO2 reading - no more guessing.
To measure CO2 in the aquarium you need to have an accurate measurement of KH and pH. Test kits are available to measure CO2 but they aren't accurate because phosphates and ions in the water cause false KH and pH readings.
When using a drop checker you don't need to measure the KH or pH. The KH in the drop checker is already aknown value (this is the reason for an accurate KH Standard) and the pH is measured in the drop checker. The drop checker has pH indicating solution in it , so by observing the color of the solution in the drop checker you will know the CO2 level of the aquarium water.

After light carbon (CO2 is a carbon source) is the next primary need of aquatic plants, low carbon is one of the main causes of algae and poor plant growth. Having proper CO2 levels is one of the most important factors for aquatic plant health. A drop checker is a great tool for monitoring and maintaining CO2 levels in the aquarium.
